The key of fast reading : Cross Reference

Cross reference plays the most important role for patent reader to really understand a patent.  From the first brief understanding of a patent, the more detailed understanding of a patent, to a concrete understanding of a patent, we could say that the “cross reference” ensures a patent reader to gain the spirit of a patent.  The cross reference does not only include a cross reference among title, technical field, prior art, summary, detailed description, claims and drawings, but also include a cross reference in connection of element nouns and reference numerals to drawings and all other patent sections.

How to have a cross reference

The measures to provide an excellent interface for cross reference include:

  • Multiple windows

  • Highlight of element nouns and reference numeral

  • Each drawing being allocated with its all corresponding element nouns and reference numerals

  • Drawings being configured to follow the paragraph in the detailed description

  • Claim could be noted

  • Drawings being zoom-in and zoom-out

  • One-touch for full document translation

Do you have a tool to read USPTO patent having a meaningful format of claims?

We have not had a useful software tool to provide you with a meaningful format of claims yet until our product does.  An ideal claim format should be able to explain a claim.

What kind of form should it have?  If we carefully observe the detailed structure of a claim, it could be classified as follows :

1. Color Block

2. Matching Definition

3. Gathering Definition

4. Reference Numerals Added

5. Level Representatives For Element Nouns

1. Color Blocks

A claim could be divided as several different block, and each block has its respective color different from its neighboring blocks for sake of distinguishing.

2. Matching Definition  and  3. Gathering Definition

They come from the word “AND”

In claim, we usually define an element noun with more than one definition in sequence. For example, an antenna broadcasting a transmitting signal and attached with a pad.

For the above example, we prefer the above definition to be :

an antenna

<~ broadcasting a transmitting signal and

<~ attached with a pad.

On the other hand, in claim, we usually define an element noun with a subordinating structure such as:

an antenna having a supporting leg and a signal transmitting pin.

For the above example, we prefer the meaningful format to be:

an antenna having

a supporting leg and a signal transmitting pin.

In other words, the element nouns of “supporting leg” and “signal transmitting pin” are gathered in the same line.

4. Reference Numerals Added

In order to have a quick reference between the element noun and its reference numerals, each element noun should be shown together with its reference numerals.

5. Level Representatives For Element Nouns

Each main element and other element belonging to the main element should be shown with different symbols to explain the element level thereof.  Therefore, a patent reader could further understand the structure of a claim.
